What do you think?
In essence…Saint Nicholas/Santa Claus has no relevance to christmas. The date anyway.
He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and is now commonly identified with Santa Claus. His reputation evolved among the faithful, as was the custom in his time. – Wiki.
The tradition of Saint Nicholas Day, usually on 6 December, is a festival for children in many countries in Europe related to surviving legends of the saint, and particularly his reputation as a bringer of gifts. The American Santa Claus, as well as the Anglo-Canadian and British Father Christmas, derive from these legends. “Santa Claus” is itself derived from the Dutch Sinterklaas. – Wiki.
Is he real? Well…he was. But we’ve changed the story a little. We’ve created this magical story where he delivers presents to every child in the world, rules the roost in the North Pole, has a host of Elves pimping his ride, eats apparantly millions of mince pies and chugs down many maaaaany glasses of milk in a night, gets a luxury ride with some pretty snorted-out reindeers and..errrr….ho ho hos a lot.
But it seems he has become a symbol. We’ve made him one. And it’s a symbol that I like. The Easter Bunny can screw off. Tooth Fairy? Wrong. Stealing children’s teeth?? Nah maaaate!!
Christmas has become this beautiful ball of red and white fluff. And however your situation may be, it always feels nice and cosy to be contained within it.
I’ve had a bad year. The worst year. But with christmas coming, I feel like that ’symbol’ is about, spreading his christmas spirit, wrapping me up in the fluffy ball, making me twinkle a little with that special sparkle.
I never believed in Santa. But on many Christmas Eves…I’ve looked out of the window for him.
I still do it now…
